Seoul, South Korea – South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was compelled to revoke the martial law he declared within just 24 hours due to widespread opposition.
The martial law, announced on Tuesday evening, faced intense backlash, prompting President Yoon to retract the order.
The decision was unanimously opposed by 190 members of the National Assembly, leading to the withdrawal of the order.
In a statement, President Yoon said, “At the request of the National Assembly, martial law has been lifted, and the military has been withdrawn. I respect the demand of the National Assembly.”
However, shortly after the repeal of the martial law, protests erupted across South Korea. Demonstrators are now demanding President Yoon Suk-yeol’s resignation.
The martial law was initially imposed by President Yoon on Tuesday evening, citing the need to remove so-called “anti-national elements.”
This move, however, triggered strong political and public resistance, culminating in its quick reversal.
